Pickleball with kids and family in Bacolod

Why it works: pickleball is one of the few sports a nine-year-old and a grandparent can play together and both have a good time. The court is small, the ball is slow and light, the paddle is short and easy to control, and games are quick. That combination lowers the barrier for kids and for anyone returning to sport after a long break.

A realistic starting age

Most children can rally cooperatively by seven or eight and play real games by about ten. Younger kids can still have fun with a shortened court, a bigger target and no score — the goal at that age is contact and confidence, not competition. There is no upper age limit; the low-impact movement is a big part of why older players love it.

Running a family session on one court

  • Group of 4: straightforward doubles, swap partners each game.
  • Group of 5–8: rotate — winners stay one game, then everyone shuffles so the kids are not always against the strongest adult.
  • Mixed ability: pair a strong adult with the youngest child against two mid-level players. It self-levels.

Book a single Playing Court for 60–90 minutes to start. If the group grows, the group booking guide covers two and three-court sessions.

Keeping it safe and fun indoors

  • Non-marking court shoes for everyone — flip-flops and bare feet slip. Kids' court or trainer shoes are fine.
  • Hydration breaks even though it is air-conditioned — kids forget.
  • One ball per court in play. Loose balls underfoot are the most common trip.
  • Start cooperative. "How many can we hit in a row?" builds rallies and patience before you introduce scoring and the kitchen rule.

Why indoors specifically

Family sessions outdoors tend to end early because a child overheats or the sun gets brutal. Indoors, none of that applies — the session ends when everyone is genuinely done, not when the weather calls it.
