Why pickleball for a work outing: the whole point of team building is that everyone takes part. Pickleball delivers that better than most options — the rules fit on a napkin, a total beginner is rallying in ten minutes, and the short games mean nobody is stuck watching. It is active without being intimidating, and mixed-ability doubles is genuinely fun rather than a chore for the athletic half of the office.
The format
For 12–24 people over two hours, book all three playing courts for the same block and run a mixer: players are re-drawn into new pairs every round, so by the end everyone has played with and against most of the group — including people from other departments they never normally talk to. Keep a simple running points tally if you want a "winner," but the social mixing is the real output.
Two-hour run sheet
- 0:00–0:15 — arrival, shoes on, a two-minute rules briefing (serve, double-bounce, kitchen line).
- 0:15–0:30 — one relaxed warm-up game per court, no score, just rallying.
- 0:30–1:40 — mixer rounds, ~8–10 minutes each, re-draw partners between rounds.
- 1:40–2:00 — a light final around, tally, and coffee at the chill zone.
What to organise in advance
- Book the courts on the Book page for the same date and start time — see the group booking guide — then message the venue to confirm the bracket and any longer block.
- Paddles: ask how many you can borrow; have staff bring their own if they have them.
- Dress code: tell everyone non-marking court shoes and clothes they can move in. Send them the rules guide the day before.
- One organiser runs the rotation on the day so it stays on schedule.
Why indoors
A company session outdoors is one heatwave or one downpour away from a write-off. Indoors, air-conditioned and open 24/7, you pick the slot that suits the workday — a Friday 4 PM finish, say — and it happens regardless of weather.
Put it into practice on court.
